This project will cover...
This project will cover a basic overview of butterflies and moths for kindergarten through second grade students. I would like to include the following information: What makes a butterfly and a moth an insect, their unique life-cycle, the differences between butterflies and moths, and possibly expose them to the indigenous butterflies and moths of California. I am also thinking of incorporating a lesson on symmetry for math. It is my intention to use this unit as a supplement to a thematic unit on insects in the spring. I will not be putting an emphasis on students learning the scientific name for butterflies other than to expose them to the fact they do exist. This would be more appropriate for students out of my targeted age range.

Learner Tasks:
The culminating task in this project might be
To illustrate and name their own species of butterfly or moth and illustrate (through a drawing on paper or on KidPix) the life-cycle of their species based on what they learned in the web quest. Students can dictate the information about their species to to an adult for a written copy or give an oral presentation to the class (or both!) Students should include information about what makes their species a butterfly or a moth. In addition, students should demonstrate higher level thinking skills by including a judgement about the butterflies role inour environment.
