Topic: U.S. history as a parallel to a history of the great American pastime.

In this space, write a short paragraph about the idea. What's the main idea? What kinds of things might be included? What's not going to included?

This project will cover... Origins and history of baseball with study of concurrent events in U.S. history.

English learners frequently need to be taught cultural idioms as well as language idioms. Sports are a unifying concept in U.S. society. Newer immigrants can feel more at home when they have something in common with native English speakers. Baseball has played an imprtant role as an "equalizer". This sport is interesting to many children and a parallel investigation of important events in baseball history with simultaneous events in U.S. history will hold the focus of many students who might otherwise feel no connection with U.S. history.

Learning Goals:

What kinds of things do you hope your students will learn? You might want to put objectives in the form of a bulleted list like this:

Student will learn.:

Learner Task:

What are you going to ask your learners to do/perform/create to indicate that they've learned what you wanted them to learn? An oral presentation? A letter to the President? A HyperStudio representation of a tidal pool? A simulated diary of a pioneer?

The culiminating task in this project might be...

Create as a class, a timeline showing simultaneous events in baseball and in American history

Resources:

All About Baseball and Softball

What websites have you already identified that might be useful? What books, tapes and other offline resources do you know about?

Resources for this project idea might include....

When you're done drafting your idea, erase all the green text prompts, and save the file under an appropriate name like tide-investigation.html. Your instructor or one of the mentors will collect it for you and it will be posted on the symposium website in a day or two.
