Triton Projects Under Development
In this list we use the terminology of the
software industry to describe how far along each project is. An
Alpha project
has been completely conceptualized, but not all the details have been
fleshed out. A project at the Beta stage is fairly complete
and is ready to be tested in the classroom. When projects achieve
Released status,
they've been tried and tweaked and are ready for wider
adoption.
- Whale
Wise
- A short activity by Janice Thiel
which engages students in analyzing the characteristics of six
types of whales. Status:
Beta.
- Descent
into Monterey Bay
- This is an experimental application of
RealAudio to create a bilingual lesson. Questions at the
elementary and middle school level are provided to guide the
learner's attention. Created by Dan McDowell based on materials
provided by Sea Studios. Status:
Beta.
- Pollution
Solutions
- In this three week unit by Cheryl Rondestvedt,
students analyze pollution problems in a specific geographical
area and propose solutions. Status:
Beta.
- Educated
Guess
- This is a longterm activity in which students in
a number of classes would work together to predict near-future
events. We anticipate modifying the pages you see here to focus on
the Pacific Rim and to pose questions in three area: Politics, the
Economy and the Environment. A new contest would run every month.
Status: Early Alpha.
- Latitude
and Longitude
- A one to two week unit by Nancy Pickett which
was inspired by an idea from Carol Kerney. Students traverse the
world along San Diego's latitude and longitude, researching major
locations along the way. Status: Early
Alpha.
- San
Diego-Biarritz Comparison
- A three-week unit by Susanne Hirsch in
which students research both locations and summarize their
findings in French. Status:
Beta.
- Ecological
Survey
- A publication-oriented unit by Sara Watts in which
students observe and research plants and animals near the shore
and on land and make comparisons. Their reports are then indexed
in a growing database of descriptions that other schools can
contribute to or use. Status:
Alpha
- Panama

students research the past and possible future of the Panama
Canal. Status: Early Alpha.
